Quetzalcoatl Rampant

A couple of months ago I finished rebasing and touching up my 1/72 scale Aztecs and Conquistadors but hasn't actually played a game with them.  If come across the Lion Rampant variant "Quetzalcoatl Rampant" which can be found on the excellent I Live With Cats blog (Link) and decided these looked perfect for a test game.

I hadn't played Lion Rampant for ages but luckily Eric the Shed had arranged a Crusades themed game the week before and my son and I took part, fielding the Crusader forces.  There's a report here on Eric's blog.  Let's just say it didn't go well with the Crusaders failing practically every morale roll we made (and admittedly a flawed plan which the Saracens exploited fully).  At least it meant that for the Aztec game I was fully up to date and familiar with the rules.  Quetzalcoatl Rampant has a few variations.  The Conquistadors have half strength units to reflect their low numbers but are significantly more powerful with better strength and defence and of course they have the benefit of  horses and black powder weapons which can have a devastating effect on the Aztecs.  The natives considerably outnumber the Spanish and have the option to capture rather than kill which also saps morale (presumably as the captives still-beating hearts are plucked out etc) although no one did this in our game.

We allocated sides randomly and my opponent, Anthony, took the Aztecs.  We played a scenario where the Aztecs had to defend a sacred pyramid in the centre of the table with part of their force and hope remainder of their warriors arrived in time to repel the plundering Spanish.  This was a  large Lion Rampant game with 35 points per side.  I find the activation rules for Lion rampant a bit disjointed...normally if a unit fails it's command roll then the whole side stops.  At the games at Eric the Sheds the house rule is that even if an individual unit fails we continue for each one in a side.  As a compromise I stuck with the normal LR rule but each of us had 2 commands...the Aztecs had the defenders and the relief force and the Spanish had the Conquistadors and some Tlaxcalan allies.

Initially things looked pretty difficult for the Aztecs.  The Spanish steamed forward although their allies proved a lot less enthusiastic.  The pyramid was defended by the elite Aztec Eagle and Jaguar knights but the relief force was also reluctant to hurry to their rescue.

The Spanish chased off some Aztec skirmishers with a  pack of War Dogs but these in turn took heavy casualties as the key did so and being only 6 strong instead of the usual 12 this meant they couldn't take much punishment.

The Tlaxcalans fielded a unit of archers who proved pretty effective in weakening the Eagle Knights before being driven off the table as the Knights charged forward uncontrollably.  They eventually came to grief themselves when the Spanish cavalry hit them.  By this point the Aztecs relief force was beginning to but crucially most of Anthony's skirmish troops had lagged behind.  Missile troops always seem powerful in LR and these may have made an impact if they'd got there in time.  As it was the Spanish horse and Swordsmen  were able to punch through the centre and seize the Pyramid, winning the game.  What I hadn't realised (but Anthony had) was that I was only a unit away from my army morale breaking so the result was a very close run thing indeed.

The rule variants worked really well and although I'd initially been worried that the Spanish were overpowered the game was well balanced in the end.  Many thanks to the I Live with Cats blog for a great adaptation.

Sunday round up

So that's the Aztecs and Conquistadors finally re-based and completed...well, I say completed...

I came across an unopened box of Aztecs while sorting them out so I'll paint up some of these as extras for the Aztecs and allies for the Spanish.  Nice to kind of finish a project though!

I've also been busy selling off stuff that has been lying in the loft for years.  It's one of those jobs that I've been meaning to do for ages but now that I've started it's been quite fun watching the eBay counters ticking round as bids arrive (usually).  It's been interesting to see what items sell and what are unloved.  Making a bit of cash is a nice bonus although that only holds water if no one asks how much I paid for the items in the first place.

The other danger is that I find things in the selling pile and then decide that actually I'd rather keep them.  I nearly didn't post a set of Warlord Games Romans and Celts which I bought and painted when hard plastics first came on the market...they've never actually seen a game but once I opened up the box I immediately started thinking about keeping them and, of course, I'd need to add some more figures!  Good sense prevailed though and they were quickly photographed and wrapped in bubble wrap and have gone off to new homes where hopefully they'll get some use.  I did weaken though when I came across some 15mm Marlburian figures...I was going to sell these (remnants of a club project that never got off the ground I think) but then remembered that I'd  enjoyed researching and painting the various regiments so they've been put aside and spared trial by eBay.

Gaming-wise I took part in an excellent and rather bloody Pike and Shotte ECW game at Eric the Shed's earlier in the week in which he'd decided to extend his already huge table to just under 20'.  Although the table has always seemed more than big enough this did mean that even with 5 of us playing, there was plenty of room for manoeuvre...or lack of manoeuvre in my case as I repeatedly failed to get my forces moving for several turns. This actually proved a blessing in the end as it meant that my opponent had moved away, responding to the carnage in the centre of the table and allowing me to get into a decent position relatively undisturbed and eventually win my bit of the battle at least...great fun!

More Re-basing

More re-basing...it's quite therapeutic once you get into a routine!  Strip the figure off the old base and glue it to the next...add some Vallejo textured basing stuff, give the figures an Army painter dip, add some flock... and repeat...

I've now re-based around a 125 Aztecs and 40-odd Spanish. I'm finishing off the remaining 20 Aztecs and that will leave another 44 Spanish....phew.  I've also discovered a couple of new boxes of unpainted Aztecs that I must have bought somewhere.  Although I already have lots of Aztecs I'll probably add a few more as Tlaxcalan allies for the Spanish

I spotted that the last issue of Wargames Illustrated has an adaptation of Congo for a South American setting and this includes cards etc for Conquistadors so I think an expedition to El Dorado might be on the cards!

Spring cleaning and Aztecs

No, I haven't been spring-cleaning my Aztecs....I suspect that would be a bit of a chore given all the blood and gore from the human sacrifices.

No, I've been having a bit of a clear out of rules books, figures and boardgames.  I finally came to the conclusion that there is far too much stuff stacked up in the loft so a major clear out is in order with a  pile of stuff headed to eBay.

I've also finally resumed a couple of projects, beginning with sorting out the large amount of 20mm Aztecs that I'd acquired a few years ago.   I'd made a bit of a start on these some time ago but they've then  languished under my desk so I've spent a therapeutic evening rebating lots of figures.  They were actually quite well based already  (seriously...they seem to have been coated in concrete!) but I wanted to have them individually based.

I've now used up all my 20mm bases from Warbases and have textured all the bases and dipped a lot of the Aztecs in Army Painter shade.  More bases are on order as well as some movement trays.  There are a few Conquistadors that need rebasing but a lot of progress has been made!

Aztec update...

Last month I mentioned that I'd started working on sorting out the boxes of 1/72 plastic Aztecs that I'd rediscovered.  The figures themselves were painted well...they came from 2 lots on Ebay and while one set are noticeably better than the other, neither is too shabby at all.  But in both sets the figures were based in multiples...possibly for a DBx rule set and I really prefer to have them individually based so that I can use them for skirmish level games.

So I've been beavering away rebasing the first batch of Conquistadors.  Rebasing is one of those tasks that people seem to hate but I find it strangely therapeutic...it's pretty mindless but I can listen to some music and plod away until they are all completed.

I've been using bases from Minibits which I'd picked up at Salute.  The figures have also been dipped in some Army Painter dip and just need a matt varnishing which I'll give them tomorrow

Unexpected Aztecs...

To people of a certain age Aztec could conjure up thoughts of this chocolatey treat....

..or this fine example of Postcard Records' classic 80's Glasgow Jangly guitar music....

...both of which are classics.  Apparently there was also a 15th Century Empire by the same name....

I've always been interested in the Aztec/Conquistador period although I've never done much about it gaming-wise. My only proper reading (not sure if Ladybird books count here) was Bernal Diaz's Conquest of New Spain.  My son and I were lucky enough to go to an excellent exhibition at the British Museum in 2009 which had some fascinating artifacts on show.  A few years ago I picked up a couple of boxes of the Revell 1/72 Aztecs and Conquistadors with a half-hearted plan to paint them up.  I also bought a box which had been painted up pretty well from Ebay, and I came across this while rummaging for something else in the loft.  You'll have gathered from this and other posts that my loft is a scary, disorganised mess but it does occasionally yield up pleasant surprises.  I then discovered a second box of even better painted figures which I have no recollection of buying!  From an invoice in the box I picked these up in 2009 (obviously inspired by the exhibition I'd just seen) for the princely sum of £2.75!

The question now is what to do with them.  I have a few options.  Somewhere in the loft I have a set of a Central American specific set of rules by Chris Peers.  I also have a set of Irregular Wars which include stats for Aztecs etc.  I'm more tempted however by either using the new(ish) Osprey En Garde rules or tweaking Lion Rampant.  Luckily someone else has done all the hard work for that... I came across this blog....I Live with Cats.  The blog contains a variation of LR entitled (of course) Quetzalcoatl Rampant which look ideal.

The next question is going to be do I have the enthusiasm to rebase the figures.  They are currently a mix of multiple based figures or some singly based ones.  The latter will be fine for En Garde but the multiple bases are of varying sizes so I fear some tedious re-basing is due...
